Graded timber, cut joints and a single datum across every room.
Carpentry is the trade that holds a building together. Long before the paint goes on and the fixtures arrive, someone has to cut, fit and fix the timber that everything else depends on. Get that stage right and the rest of the build runs smoothly. Get it wrong and you spend the next twenty years living with doors that stick, floors that creak and trim that never quite closes up.
Structural framing forms the skeleton of a home or extension, and it has to be square, plumb and properly braced before anything is loaded onto it. First-fix work covers the studwork, joists, roof timbers and openings that disappear behind plasterboard. Second-fix is everything you actually see and touch every day: skirting, architrave, staircases, doors, built-in storage and the fine detail around windows.
Each stage needs a different eye, and we staff them accordingly. The carpenter framing a roof and the one hanging a run of cabinetry are rarely the same person, and pretending otherwise is how projects end up with a solid structure and a disappointing finish.
Softwood and engineered timber behave differently as humidity changes through the year, and a board that has not been allowed to acclimatise on site will move after installation no matter how carefully it was cut. We specify graded, properly seasoned stock, store it correctly while the job is running, and allow for expansion where the design calls for it.
When a client wants hardwood for a staircase or a run of cabinetry, we talk through grain, durability and cost before anything is ordered, so there are no surprises when the timber arrives.
Joints are cut to fit rather than filled to hide a gap. Fixings are set below the surface and stopped cleanly. Levels are checked as work proceeds instead of at the end, when a correction means pulling apart a day of progress. Our team measures against a single datum across a room so that skirting, worktops and cabinets all agree with each other.
Timber work also sits between the trades on either side of it, so a delay in framing pushes back electrical, plumbing and plastering in turn. We plan our stages against the wider programme, confirm dimensions before fabrication starts, and flag clashes early rather than working around them later.
Older properties rarely have a square wall or a level floor, so packing, scribing and careful shimming become as important as the cutting itself. Occupied homes need dust control, protected walkways and work that pauses at sensible hours. Commercial fit-outs often run to a fixed handover date with other trades on site at the same time.
We price for those realities up front, because an estimate that ignores them is not really an estimate at all. Whether the job is a single repair, a fitted study, a deck, a full first-fix package or the finish carpentry on a new build, you get a schedule at the outset, a named point of contact throughout, and honest notice if something on site changes what is achievable.
An estimate should tell you what you are buying. Ours separates labour from materials, names the timber grade and finish where it matters, and lists what is excluded so nothing arrives as a surprise halfway through. If a specification changes once work is underway, you get the revised figure in writing before we proceed rather than a larger invoice at the end.
Small repairs are usually quoted from photographs and a phone call. Anything structural, fitted or spanning several rooms is worth a site visit, because the measurements that matter are rarely the ones on a drawing. Either way the visit and the written estimate are free, and there is no obligation to book the work afterwards.
The questions we get asked most often about carpentry work, timelines and pricing.
Framing, trim and finish carpentry, custom woodwork, cabinetry, decking and structural repairs for residential and commercial projects.
Small trim and repair jobs often finish in a few days; framing or full custom builds run several weeks. You get a schedule before work starts.
Yes. We work on homes, offices, retail fit-outs and light commercial buildings.
We advise on timber species, grades and finishes, and can produce drawings so you can see the detail before we cut.
Yes — every carpentry project starts with a free, no-obligation written estimate.
Most carpentry is quoted as a fixed price against an agreed specification, so you know the figure before we start. Day rates are only used for open-ended remedial work where the extent cannot be seen until we open things up.
Yes. Waste, offcuts and stripped-out timber leave with us, floors are protected while we work, and the area is swept and vacuumed at the end of each day rather than only at handover.
Speak to a carpenter, not a call centre. We’ll talk through your project and give you a straight answer.
